Abstract

Introduction: Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder with a heterogeneous pathology (5), and a prevalence of 1 to 2 percent among the population aged over 65 years (1, 3). Motor symptoms are associated with the profound neuronal loss in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), (20). Striatal dopaminergic innervation and nigral neurons are progressively lost with associated Lewy pathology readily apparent on autopsy.
